Few people in this city are as responsible for setting me on the career path that I've enjoyed as Shirley Chan. As a young activist with Strathcona Property Owners and Tenants Association (SPOTA) she stood up with residents of Chinatown and Strathcona to oppose the creation of freeways that were slated to destroy communities (like Hogan's Alley, which we lost). Shirley served as Chief of Staff for Mayor Mike Harcourt, was Chair of the Board of Governors for Vancity Credit Union and UBC, Manager of Non-Market Housing for the City of Vancouver until 2000 and eventually became the CEO of Building Opportunities with Business, where she gave me my first chance to work as a co-op student in the Community Economic Development sector. I have always been deeply appreciative of her mentorship, guidance and encouragement.
"I support Wes Regan, Green candidate for Vancouver East because he has a track record of working to improve conditions for the people and businesses in the riding. He organized the Hastings Crossing Business Improvement Area and was its first Executive Director. Wes is young, energetic, has integrity, intelligence and is forward thinking. He will give voice to the people of Vancouver East in Ottawa."
Thank you Shirley!
